Mayor Qourzal is a first-generation American who received his undergraduate degree and MBA from Baylor University and the Hankamer School of Business. The son of missionary parents, he grew up in Spain and is fluent in Spanish. He is a Waco 40 under 40 Award Nominee and is married to his college sweetheart, Lisa. They have three children in Midway schools and the Qourzals are members of Antioch Community Church in Waco.
Mayor Amine Qourzal is passionate about the city of Woodway.
A resident since 2013, Mayor Qourzal has spent over a decade serving on the Parks and Recreation Board (2013-2017), the Planning and Zoning Board (2017-2019), and the City Council. He was elected to the city council in 2019, serving until he was elected Mayor in 2022. The youngest Mayor in Woodway history. In this position, he serves all the residents of Woodway by addressing issues that matter the most and working toward a brighter future for our city.
Mayor Qourzal also served on the McLennan County COVID Strategic Communications Task Force during the pandemic, ensuring timely updates and responses. He coordinated with health officials and city leaders to provide accurate information on testing, safety protocols, and vaccinations. His efforts helped the community navigate the pandemic by promoting awareness and supporting vulnerable populations.
Some of the notable accomplishments during his tenure on the city council include:
Providing residents with a balanced city budget and a no-revenue tax rate (one of the lowest in the county) for 3 straight years
Doubling the city’s homestead property tax exemption for homeowners 65 or older, from $10,000 to $20,000 and creating a new disabled homeowners tax exemption at $20,000.
The reopening of the beautifully redesigned Carleen Bright Arboretum
The construction and development of the brand-new, state-of-the-art Woodway Family Center, providing recreational opportunities for our entire community
Infrastructure improvements, including the Fairway Sewer Project and Ritchie Road Water Line Project, as well as the ground storage water tank rehabilitation projects
Obtaining a $1 million grant from TxDOT for the construction of a sidewalk on Estates Drive, bringing additional safety to school kids and neighborhoods
Hiring a new city manager, bringing fresh leadership to the city's administration
Installing new playground equipment at Whitehall Park with additional parking, enhancing recreational facilities for our youngest residents
Recognizing the MLK holiday for the first time in Woodway and giving staff the day to honor MLK Jr’s legacy
Updating the Master Plan for Woodway's growth and development, known as Woodway Forward, to guide the city's future development
Welcoming new businesses to Woodway, fostering economic growth, and providing more amenities for residents
Fostering community involvement through multiple community events, strengthening the sense of community and engagement among residents
Fighting for the property rights of every resident, ensuring that every person who calls Woodway home has city ordinances that protect against nuisances and enhance their quality of life
Approving a modern digital newsletter and communication system to share news and updates from the city to all residents
